"Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it, possibly without claiming it, SHE STANDS UP FOR ALL WOMEN"
-Maya Angelou

If you’ve been around a bit, you know I’ve been on a conference kick lately. As I made a career transition to the brand design niche, I really took it upon myself to challenge my talent and personal skills by attending several conferences. The inspiration and community that I found at these conferences was not only a breath of fresh air, but has really propelled my creative and business ideas. All of this has helped me find and solidify my power as a designer and woman.

I believe strongly that all women have a superpower.

Some have several! Your superpower is what you feel inside that makes you unique, that makes you … you. Some women display their superpower bravely. Think of Oprah using her notoriety and personal story of struggles to bring education to the girls of Africa. Think of Malala Yousafzai standing up to opponents of girls’ education in Pakistan even after being shot in the head to become an education activist and the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Think of your own mother showing you love and guidance. Other women guard their superpower, but it is still there!

It has been one month since I returned from the Alt Summit conference in Palm Springs, CA. What a powerful conference! Run by women, for women. Wow. Just wow. So many powerful, interesting, brave, creative women.

I found this community of women entrepreneurs, influencers, artists, writers, and so much more, to be invigorating. My energy and confidence was on high. This was inspiring. This was powerful.

One powerful woman at the Alt conference was the creator and founder of Alt Summit itself – Gaby Blair! She was the keynote speaker that kicked off the conference with a bang…her new book: Ejaculate Responsibly.

In this book, she uses humor and facts to make the case for placing the responsibility of preventing unwanted pregnancies onto men instead of only women. Women, who are only fertile a few days out of the month, end up carrying the burden of unwanted pregnancies, when men in turn are fertile 24/7.

Gaby Blair’s superpowers: powerful writer, brave agitator, Alt Summit conference icon.

Cyndie Spiegel and Jen Cloes at Alt Summit 2023

Another Alt speaker full of superpowers was Cyndie Spiegel. Cyndie also launched her new book: Microjoys: Finding Hope (Especially) When Life is Not Okay. Cyndie explains that microjoys are part of the everyday, a practice of uncovering joy and finding hope in the ordinary moments and treasures around us. Microjoys are what she found (and leaned on) in an extremely difficult time in her life. Listening to her tell her story at Alt was inspirational to me.

Cyndie’s superpowers: oozes positivity, vulnerable writer, mentor (look into her program Dear Grown Ass Women).

And then there’s me. I came to bolster my business and networking skills, but what did I walk away with? So much! I was proud of myself. I stood up in front of full rooms and asked my questions. I networked and shared my story. I found like-minded go-getter entrepreneurs. I walked away from the Alt Summit conference with confidence, community and new ideas buzzing in my head.

My superpowers: vulnerability, creativity, gratitude, networking, confidence, ready to try anything!
